With the move to a new location our local Pharmacist, Wilson Soh, asked Paul Mulvaney, a member of the Karuah Local History Group, to design a mural for the front window. Paul used a theme of “Crossing the Karuah River”.
Originally a bell would be rung and the boatman, Pappa Johnson, would row the people over.
The Karuah Ferry then took over from 1884 to 1957. The Karuah Bridge was constructed from 1956 to 1957. N.B. the date in the mural shows 1956 to 1967, this error was not the fault of Paul Mulvaney.
The final ferry trip marked the opening of the Karuah Bridge. The young boy on the right of that photo is Billy Neil a member of the Karuah Local History Group. Billy’s father, George, was a long-term operator of the ferry and he built the ferry masters cottage on the banks of the river below Memorial Park. The remains of the foundations and the access stairs are still visible.
The bridge has been upgraded many times over the years to keep it safe for traffic.
